The End of CRI

Thursday, March 12th, 2015

The company I work for has been in business in North America since 1982 and is considered the pioneer in food-specific merchandising lighting.

We’ve manufactured and sold millions of lights worldwide, and built a reputation for creating the best lighting for showcasing perishable food

and we did it by NEVER relying on the Color Rendering Index (CRI)!

In August 2014 the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) wrote a position statement finally recognizing that CRI is an outdated metric with shortcomings, “that limit its ability to fully represent how humans perceive color.” http://www.ies.org/PDF/PositionStatements/PS-8-14.pdf

When I joined this company one of the first things I learned is that decisions to purchase fresh food are subjective. As consumers, we buy based on what we perceive to be fresh and appealing. If we feel that something doesn’t look fresh, we will sift through the product until we find one that does look fresh – or worse yet, we might even go to a different supermarket. When it comes to fresh food merchandising color plays an important role – some say the most important role!

cri_not_relevant
As retailers and merchandisers, distributors, designers and reps, we all might subconsciously realize those buying decisions are subjective; but the real benefit comes when we consciously realize it – because we can do something about it.

The only real way to know how good a particular LED is at showcasing foods’ natural colors is to see it. How does it make the product look? Is it a vibrant display? Are the reds, “red” and the whites, “white”, and so on?

One simply can’t rely on numbers on a piece of paper (ie. CRI, Kelvin, etc) to answer those questions – it’s impossible. You have to see for yourself. Over the years if anyone has visited our websites (led.promolux.com or promolux.com) they’ll notice our CRI and Kelvin is not listed anywhere. We do that for a reason – because the only way you’ll know for certain if an LED will showcase your food in the best possible way is to see it for yourself. Yes, that means we get calls now and then asking for our CRI and Kelvin – and we always provide it without hesitation – but not without first giving the “see for yourself” suggestion.

Even after this post, I’m sure we’ll still get calls from time to time asking for our CRI – but now perhaps when deciding on an LED to use in fresh food display cases, more people will understand that it’s time to let go of CRI, let go of trying to decide by looking at numbers on a piece of paper, and instead say, “let’s see how this LED makes our food look; let’s see for ourselves!”

Monday, July 7th, 2014

July 7, 2014 – SHAWNIGAN LAKE, BC – Market Group Ventures, Inc. (parent company of Promolux LEDs) is pleased to announce that Promolux LEDs are the number one choice for many New York based Coldstone Creamery franchises.

Authorized New York distributor Rite-Way Service Company, installed the Promolux LEDs in the first Long Island Coldstone Creamery in February and word spread quickly between the franchises.

Not only did the owner want Promolux LEDs installed in his other stores, other franchise owners called me asking for Promolux LEDs”, says Stevenson.

Promolux LEDs come in a variety of sizes and types – from low profile sticks, to rigid bars, flexible tape, T8 & T5 replacement tubes, PARs, GU10s, Low Bay & High Bay and tracking lighting.

New Food Safe Coating For Retail Merchandising Lamps

Friday, August 14th, 2009

Promolux now offers UL approved coated versions of all our supermarket display case lamps for superior food safety control. Promolux is internationally recognized as a leader in true color definition, low radiation lighting ideal for merchandising and prolonging shelf life in meat, seafood, produce, bakery, dairy, floral, deli, and other retail displays.

The safety coating is permanently attached to each fluorescent light bulb and prevents glass shards, mercury, and phosphors from contaminating the food display if the lamp shatters. An added advantage is that the coating blocks UV radiation wavelengths from 100 to 380 nm, making Promolux’s low UV lamp even safer for all retail food applications. Coated Promolux lamps are available in all standard lamp sizes: T5, T8, and T12, in lengths from 12 inches to 8 feet.

All Promolux full spectrum lamps are made with Safe Spectrum technology which prolongs food shelf life by minimizing damaging radiation. In the past, the only way to protect retail food displays from broken light bulbs was to put the fluorescent tube in a loose fitting tubeguard or sleeve which was reused whenever the bulb was changed. However, the bulb was free to roll and move within the sleeve, making it difficult to install the light bulb. If dropped, the bulb easily slipped out of its casing, spilling shattered glass, mercury, and phosphors into food displays.

With prolonged use, tubeguards became discolored, brittle, dirty, and unsanitary. The latest lighting industry technology is to permanently attach a UL approved coating that does not discolor or become brittle to the fluorescent light. In the event that the lamp is dropped or shatters, the coating stays in place and encases the broken glass, phosphors, and mercury, protecting the food display. At the end of the three year life span of the bulb, the coating is discarded along with the lamp, and a new bulb with new coating can be installed in its place.
