Retail display case lighting applications

Produce Department Displays in Supermarket Showcases

In the produce industry, eye appeal is buy appealIn the produce industry, eye appeal is buy appeal, and the most successful produce displays are also the most colorful. It is therefore vital that fruits and vegetables in supermarket produce departments are displayed under lighting that reveals the true colors of the produce, but does not damage sensitive perishables.

Most supermarket fluorescent lighting is skewed to enhance green and yellow, which causes other colors such as red and white to appear discolored or not as bright as they should be. Under normal supermarket produce display case lighting, strawberries and radishes often look dull and cauliflower look yellow. Promolux balanced spectrum lamps reveal the true vibrant colors of fruits and vegetables.

POTATO GREENING IN SUPERMARKET PRODUCE DISPLAYS
Light causes potatoes to turn green and accelerates the production of solanine, a poisonous and potentially fatal toxin also found in eggplants, tomatoes, and peppers. Under display lighting, solanine levels can increase tenfold. <more...>

EFFECTS OF RETAIL DISPLAY CASE LIGHTING ON FRUITS AND VEGETABLES
Retail display lighting increases the surface temperature of fruits and vegetables, leading to organic and chemical reactions that change the taste and appearance of fruits and vegetables, and cause colors to fade and nutrients to be lost. <more...>

PREMATURE RIPENING OF GROCERY STORE FRUIT DISPLAYS FROM ETHYLENE GAS
Ultraviolet and visible spectrum radiation and heat from retail display lamps hasten the ripening of fruits. As fruit ripen, they release ethylene gas, which accelerates the ripening of nearby fruits and vegetables and leads to premature overripening and spoilage. <more...>

SHRINKAGE OF RETAIL FRUIT AND VEGETABLE DISPLAYS
Radiation and heat from retail display lighting lead to dehydration and product shrinkage, which can cost as much as $1 per foot per day. Leafy green vegetables and soft fruits dehydrate easily and are the greatest source of loss. <more...>

Promolux Balanced Spectrum Lamps

Produce & Salad LightingNatural colors remain true with Promolux high color definition lamps because they have a more balanced visible spectrum than other fluorescent lamps, including more of the red and blue wavelengths, and more moderate levels of the most damaging visible spectrum wavelengths, yellow and green. Promolux retail produce lighting also emit lower levels of ultraviolet radiation and heat than other commercial lighting commonly found in supermarket produce departments, making these specialty produce display case lamps the perfect lighting choice for the produce industry.
